Daily Thought For January 3, 2016

Joy

     Rejoice in this day of life, being willing to follow Me wholeheartedly—wherever I lead. Anticipate blessings as we journey together. Since I created this day of life and presented it to you free of charge, I want you receive it gratefully. Your natural tendency when you awaken is to assess the day before you, trying to discern how good (or bad) it will be. You do this almost unconsciously, often basing your conclusions on something as trivial as the weather. I urge you to break free from this habit so you can be more receptive to Me and My blessings. 
     A thankful attitude is immensely helpful. If you awaken to find a dark, rainy day, you can thank Me for the rain. Having done so, you will be much less likely to grumble about the weather. Also, remember that I have arranged the conditions of your day. So you can assume there is much good to be found in it. 
     Rejoicing will help you find many blessings in this day. If your circumstances are looking rather bleak, then be joyful in Me—your faithful companion. I want you to enjoy Me and look for precious gifts I've placed along the path we are following. In faith, be on the lookout for good things great and small. Also, because I am your Teacher, I promise to provide learning opportunities as we travel together. 
     When you reach the end of this day, stop and look back at the distance we have covered. Take time to ponder what you have learned and to savor the gifts you have found. Let your mind dwell on these things as you lie down to sleep, rejoicing in Me and My blessings. 


This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

  Powerful Reflection from The Word Among Us Let’s not get off on the wrong foot with the Pharisee in this parable. He seemed to be doing pretty well spiritually. He was not greedy, dishonest, or adulterous. He fasted twice a week and went so far as to pay tithes on all his income. He prayed at the Temple regularly. That was better than most people. So why did Jesus say he didn’t go home justified? Because the Temple was a place of encounter with God. A holy location where God and his children came together. This Pharisee seemed to be missing that connection with the Lord. Instead of speaking his prayer to God, he prayed “to himself” (Luke 18:11) and itemized his accomplishments. By focusing on his righteous acts, he was not really making himself present to God. He wasn’t inviting God to be present to him either. With God Setbacks Become Opportunities EVERY TIME something thwarts your plans or desires, use that as a reminder to communicate with Me. This practice has several benefits. The first is obvious: Talking with Me blesses you and strengthens our relationship. Another benefit is that disappointments, instead of dragging you down, are transformed into opportunities for good. This transformation removes the sting from difficult circumstances, making it possible to be joyful in the midst of adversity.  Begin by practicing this discipline in all the little disappointments of daily life. It is often these minor setbacks that draw you away from My Presence. When you reframe setbacks as opportunities, you find that you gain much more than you have lost. It is only after much training that you can accept major losses in this positive way.
